One of the most historic and storied hotels in Kansas City, Hotel Savoy at 219 W 9th Street dates to 1888 when founded and built in the Art Nouveau style by coffee purveyors John and Charles Arbuckle. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the hotel has been restored twice, once in the mid 1980s, and again between 2016 and 2018. Until its 2016 renovation, it was the oldest continually operating hotel west of the Mississippi River.

With its 1903 west wing expansion came the addition of the now equally famous Savoy Grill, which has remained in continuous operation since. To this day, the dining room retains its original fixtures, including a carved Oak bar, reception desk, beamed ceiling, stained glass windows and 12 prized Edward Holslag murals depicting westward expansion on the Santa Fe Trail.

Presidential patrons included Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, John D. Rockefeller, and local favorites Harry and Bess Truman, frequently seen dining in the Grill’s Booth No.4.

Today, the Savoy operates as 21C Museum Hotel Kansas City.
