Sign painter Jim Chilcutt Sr. owned Jim’s Signs in Blue Springs, Missouri. This Rocket to Saturn neon sign was found in Jim’s collection after his passing in 2019.
A Vietnam War veteran, Chilcutt served in the 1st Air Calvary where he painted helicopters. When he returned to the states, Jim went to work for Scotty Williams at Shamrock Signs and Advertising in Kansas City, Missouri. After learning the sign painting trade, he began his own business painting signs throughout the greater Kansas City area.
A couple of anecdotes about Jim: First, after the 1991 fall of the USSR, Jim was commissioned by a Russian pilot to paint a Russian flag on his private jet. Second, probably due to his company’s name, customers occasionally thought Jim’s last name was Sign, not Chilcutt.
LUMI is thankful to Jim’s son, Jimmy Chilcutt, who reached out to LUMI in 2020, and to his mother, Raejean Chilcutt, who donated this special neon.
