Opened in 1983 at 414 103rd Street (at Wornall Road) in Kansas City, Missouri, the original Coach’s Bar & Grill was a popular sports bar and watering hole with an excellent menu, that somehow survived five Indian Creek floods. In one, co-owners Chris and Brian climbed onto the roof to escape rising water until rescued by firefighters.
2017 was a very tough year for Coach’s. Owner Mike Darby was killed while walking his dogs on the Indian Creek Trail—a tragic loss felt by the entire city. A few months later, a sixth flash flood destroyed the 103rd Street location, forcing Coach’s to consolidate the business to its second location in Overland Park, Kansas.
Co-owner Chris Carle donated this familiar sign from the original location, a shopping center which has since been razed and purchased by the city with plans to repurpose the land as a green space that will absorb flood water. LUMI is pleased to display this familiar green neon from such a beloved local establishment.
