In 1980, Bill and TJ Palmer opened T.J. Applebee’s Rx for Edibles & Elixirs® in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1983, the chain became Applebee’s Grill & Bar and in 1986 Kansas City locals Abe Gustin and John Hamra opened their first KC franchise. By 2007, Applebee’s covered the U.S., the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and China.

Now 40-plus years old with a global footprint, Applebee’s succeeds like any successful neighborhood establishment—through adaptation, be it menu evolution, charitable fund raising, Carside To Go pickup service, Weight Watchers® menu options, active-duty and retired military recognition, or by assisting associates through the Heidi Fund (named in honor of a Kansas City server).

Purchased by IHOP Corporation (Dine Brands Global) for $2.1 billion in 2007, the two restaurants became the largest full-service restaurant company in the world.

Our Applebee’s neon sign was graciously donated by a sign company from St. Joseph, Missouri, in support of our mission to feature Greater Kansas City area businesses.
